How Do You Know If Quilt Fabrics Work Together?
Share
Planning the Good Luck Pillow Project
Sometimes the hardest part of quilting isn’t the sewing.
It’s choosing the fabrics.
You might have a beautiful stack of fabrics sitting in your sewing space, but when it comes time to start a new project you suddenly wonder:
Will these colors work together?
Should the background be lighter?
Do these prints feel balanced?
I caught myself doing that exact thing recently while planning a new pillow project.
I was standing in my sewing space holding a few green fabrics together and asking the question that almost every quilter eventually asks:
Do these fabrics actually work?
That little moment is what inspired this week’s video.

This pillow project features a bold geometric quilt block that works beautifully with two contrasting fabrics and a background.
It’s the kind of project that can become:
• a cozy couch pillow
• a thoughtful handmade gift
• a relaxing afternoon sewing project
A Simple Trick for Choosing Quilt Fabrics
One thing that helps me when choosing fabrics is taking a few minutes to test ideas before cutting into my fabric.
Instead of guessing, I like to plan.
That’s exactly why I created something new called the Project Planning Page.
This simple worksheet helps you:
• color the quilt block
• test fabric combinations
• organize fabrics from your stash
• plan your project before you sew
You can download the Good Luck Pillow Project Planning Page here:

The planning page is free and pairs with the Good Luck Pillow digital quilt pattern.
The Good Luck Pillow Pattern
The Good Luck Pillow is available as a $2 digital quilt pattern.
It creates an 18 inch couch pillow featuring a bold quilt block set on point.
This project is perfect for:
• using fabrics from your stash
• practicing simple piecing
• creating a quick and meaningful quilted project

A Simple Fabric Tip
If you ever feel unsure about fabrics, try this simple balance:
• one bold fabric
• one supporting fabric
• one calm background
That combination almost always creates a quilt block that feels balanced and beautiful.
Sewing Something Story-Worthy
One of my favorite things about quilting is how a simple project can become something meaningful.
A pillow on the couch.
A table topper in the kitchen.
A quilt someone pulls out years later.
Every project becomes part of the story.
And that’s what Quilting your Legacy is all about.
Taking the fabrics you already love and turning them into something story-worthy.

Emily
